APRIL 28, 2026: HAWKESBURY’S leading trainer Brad Widdup is looking to talented colt Tenenbaum to lift his spirits at his home track’s biggest meeting of the year on Saturday.

With stable star Jedibeel sidelined for an indefinite period following a doomed trip to Perth and likely requiring throat surgery, Widdup is keen to see Tenenbaum put himself in the frame for a Brisbane winter carnival mission by winning the St Johns Park Bowling Club 2YO Clarendon Stakes (1400m).

A relatively new addition to Hawkesbury’s calendar (first run in 2006), the Clarendon regularly throws up a good horse or two, such as Zoustar, Zardozi, Graff , Royal Discretion and Media World (the latter pair went on to win the Group 3 Elite Sand & Soil Hawkesbury Guineas as three-year-olds).

Tommy Berry will ride Tenenbaum, a Snitzel colt who fetched $750,000 for Widdup’s major client Mulberry at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter yearling sale.

He has raced only twice, and on resumption impressively won a 2YO Maiden Plate (1200m) at Wyong on March 28, defeating Canberra’s Black Opal Stakes runner-up Pearl Of Dubai.

Widdup has since trialled Tenenbaum at home, and he was too good for five rivals in a 1000m two-year-old heat on April 20.

“Tommy (Berry) was away, and Rachel King rode him in the trial,” Widdup said this morning.

“Tenenbaum is a very nice colt, and it would be great to win my first feature race at our big meeting on Saturday.

“Brisbane is definitely on the radar, but let’s get through Saturday first.”

Tenenbaum is currently an $8 second favorite behind last Saturday’s Flemington winner Blind Raise (of which former Hawkesbury Race Club chief executive Ken Rutherford is a part-owner) for the $1m

Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 13.

Widdup nearly landed the Group 3 Pioneer Services Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) two years ago with Short Shorts ($11), who was edged out by $41 bolter Coco Jamboo.

Along with Tenenbaum, Widdup will run both Hyperbolic (Tyler Schiller) and Audrey’s Lane at Hawkesbury.

“I’m hoping Hyperbolic gets a start in the $250,000 Group 3 Richmond Club Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m),” Widdup said.

“Things haven’t gone right for Hyperbolic in two runs this campaign; she has had no luck at all.

“We had hoped to qualify her for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m) at Royal Randwick earlier in the month.

“Audrey’s Lane is racing well and also was nominated for the Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown, but that looks like being pretty strong.

“Most likely she will run in the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1500m).”

Widdup is still coming to terms with Jedibeel’s failed trip to Perth for the $5m The Quokka (1200m) at Ascot on April 18.

“Tyler Schiller got him into a beautiful position, but said he heard him start making a noise and his race was over,” Widdup said.

“We got him scoped at a vet clinic away from the track, and again when I got him home.

“It looks like he will need to have tie-back surgery.

“It’s hard to believe as he nearly won the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in Sydney a few weeks earlier.

“Jedibeel has been a wonderful horse for the stable and Mulberry, and hopefully we can get him back after the operation and a good spell.”
