GREENTREE'S SOLE HORSE IN WORK BANGS HOME BREAKTHROUGH
Frosty Bangers, a four-year-old son of Frosted, broke through for his first win and gave his Hawkesbury trainer her first success this season.
Whilst the gelding’s breakthrough victory at his 12th start wasn’t a surprise to Greentree, his odds certainly were.
Starting at $21 and ridden by apprentice Deon Le Roux, Frosty Bangers edged out Sweet Banter ($5.50) and $1.65 favorite Bold Bucks in the CG&E Maiden Plate (1200m).
“We got $41 early, and couldn’t believe he was that price,” Greentree said today.
“He ran home really well first-up when sixth at Hawkesbury in a 1000m Provincial Maiden earlier in the month, and was back to country grade.”
Greentree and husband Mark purchased Frosty Bangers as a 2023 Inglis Australian Easter weanling.
“He was passed in initially, and we were able to make an offer and buy him,” Greentree explained.
“Frosty Bangers has always shown potential, but always seems to find himself in the middle of trouble in his races.
“I said to Deon (Le Roux) before the race to just keep him out of trouble, but trouble happened in front of him.
“Deon gave Frosty Bangers a cracking ride, and it was such a relief to get his first win.”
Greentree said that whilst an accident on the walker earlier this year was an obvious setback for the gelding, it appeared to have been a blessing in disguise.
“We had to give him a break, and he has come back a more mature horse,” she said.
“Frosty Bangers wasn’t beaten far and hit the line well in an 800m trial at home last month, and again hit the line well on resumption when sixth to Our Noble Boy at Hawkesbury on September 5.”
Greentree has two other horses currently not in work, but is busy preparing two unraced two-year-olds (by Home Affairs and Tiger Of Mellay) for the Inglis Ready2Race sale next month.
“Our two will go to the breeze-ups at Warwick Farm on Friday en route to the October 15 sale in Sydney at the Riverside complex,” she said.
Greentree became the 11th Hawkesbury trainer to win a race this season, and Ed Cummings made it a double for the local training base when also successful at the Nowra meeting.
Cummings clinched his third success of the season when recent acquisition Time And Rhythm ($3.90) finished well to take the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1100m).
Ridden by Pierre Boudvillain, former Northern Rivers Time And Rhythm defeated You Wish ($7) and Verina ($8.50).
He was having his fourth start since joining Cummings’ team, and posted the second victory of his 28-start career after almost breaking through at Canberra at his previous start.
The first was way back in November 2003 at Coffs Harbour in an 800m Maiden scamper when ridden by Raymond Spokes.
