He was referring to his mare Confess Our Dreams’ victory at today’s Wyong Magic Millions meeting.
The leading Hawkesbury trainer took Confess Our Dreams ($2.90 favorite) back to the provincial circuit for the first time in more than two years – and she duly saluted.
Ridden by apprentice Siena Grima, she won the Provincial Benchmark 68 Handicap (1200m).
“We found a nice race for Confess Our Dreams,” Widdup said this evening.
“I’m sure we would have been in trouble finding an easier race for her if she couldn’t win today.”
After trailing Thankful Heart ($7) into the straight, Confess Our Dreams took control and appeared set for a comfortable victory.
However, she had just enough in reserve to hold off Newcastle trainer Paul Perry’s Puerto Banus ($11) and Kembla Grange trainer Joe Ible’s Spice Baby ($4,.20).
Confess Our Dreams, a five-year-old daughter of Shalaa, had started 16 times in town (for three wins on the Kensington track, Warwick Farm and Rosehill Gardens) since scoring at Newcastle in October 2023.
“Even though the margin was narrow at the end, all the same it was a good effort,” Widdup said.
“They went hard and she ran a class record, and obviously Siene’s 3kg claim was a deciding factor.”
Grima’s claim lessened Confess Our Dreams’ weight to 59.5kg, and this was her sixth win from 19 starts.
Meanwhile Widdup is looking forward to taking a lightly-raced youngster to Royal Randwick on Saturday for the $400,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) for two-year-olds.
Internal Affairs will have his second start, and Tom Sherry partners him again.
“Internal Affairs ran a great race on debut when fourth to Fireball in a 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 29, and has trained on well, Widdup said.
A son of Home Affairs, Internal Affairs was a $440,000 purchase for Mulberry Racing at Melbourne’s Inglis Premier yearling sale earlier this year.
