MONDAY: June 3, 2019: MATT Vella is an accomplished horse breaker and pre-trainer.

And no slouch either when it comes to training horses – as he showed again at Cessnock today.

“I’m having a pretty good run at present,” Vella said this evening, with obvious delight, after Silly Sally ($9.50) had outrun her rivals in the Maiden Handicap (1150m).

He certainly is. Considering Vella only ever has a few horses in work at a time, such is the busy nature of his breaking-in and pre-training business, it has been an excellent season for the Hawkesbury horseman.

His best season in fact with five winners – three of them in recent weeks.

Vella scored with I’m A Legend at Goulburn on April 28 and with the same horse at Wyong on May 16 leading up to Silly Sally’s breakthrough today.

He put blinkers on the Myboycharlie five-year-old, and it did the trick.

Jockey Chad Lever took her to the front soon after the start, got her into a good rhythm and opened a tidy lead passing the 600m.

Silly Sally was never in danger down the running and held out $101 outsider Freedom’s Fire and Barry’s Brother ($19).

“I’ve got four horses in work, and either breaking-in and pre-training up to 60,” Vella said.

“Whilst I’m delighted to get a win out of Silly Sally, she is going to be hard to place from now on.

“Early on I thought she was going to measure up to city standard, but now I’m not even sure she will make provincial standard.

“She is owned by a good mate of mine, Garth Derrig, and I’ll either try to find another suitable race or put her on the market.

“This was the perfect race today.

”I decided to put blinkers on Silly Sally because I felt they could help her focus better.

“I mentioned to Chad (Lever) this morning that if he could get a soft lead on her, I thought she would be hard to beat.”

. Vella broke in the highly promising young sprinter Classique Legend (three wins from four starts) and also pre-trains him before he goes to Les Bridge at Royal Randwick, and also has just completed the breaking-in of Winx’s half-sister (Covent Garden, by Exceed And Excel) and sent her to Chris Waller at Rosehill Gardens.
